Apple Picking

I love apple picking. When I was little and my family lived in Montreal, we used to go apple picking for my birthday. It's one of my favorite memories. So of course, I was thrilled when several families from the ward mentioned an apple picking trip on Labor Day. The orchard we went to has a "2 for 1" Labor day special for bushels of apples. To my dismay when I got up that morning, it looked like it was going to rain, as it often does in Kentucky. I was determined however, that I was going to pick apples. 2 for 1 - how could I pass that up? Mike had agreed to come with Drew and I, even though he's busy with school, and I was sure if it did rain, the rain would stop by the time we got there (a 45-ish minute drive).

Driving through Lexington country side is beautiful. All of sudden however, it started raining so hard we could hardly see out the windows. I was afraid we were going to get washed off the road. This was nothing like rain storms in Alberta. We almost turned around, but again, my dreams of homemade apple sauce for Drew and warm apple pies kept us going. Rain that hard couldn't last forever. Besides the rain, we were also very very low on gas. We had to take a detour to a small town in Kentucky which was an adventure in and of itself.

We finally made it to the orchard. The other families in the ward had already been there for awhile and were out in the apple trees when the rain hit. All the little kids were soaked through. A few of them were crying because of the thunder and lightening (it was really loud!). Most of the families were able to get at least some apples and were heading home. Mike and I decided to stay until the rain lessened up a little. Finally it did. It was still raining enough that we didn't want Drew outside, so we drove as close to the trees as we could and took turns picking apples and waiting in the car with Drew.

I was able to make some super yummy applesauce that is now stored in my deep freeze until Drew is ready to eat it! It'll only be another month or so!

resteIts so great to hear from you folks. Drew really is growing up. Babies aren't babies very long. Soon he will be sitting up and next crawling. I am sure you are catching all these precious moments on film.
Sounds like Michael is busy with his studies. Wishing you all the best in all your courses.
I love apples and right now they have all varieties. I love macintosh for pies and for eating. Right now there are lots of spartans. Its nice to be able to pick your own. We had a few crabapples this year but Judy picked them and made jelly etc. This year was not a good year for apples around here. Maybe next year will be better.Did you have a hot summer? Our Sept was pretty hot but Oct is wet and cold so far.I
guess Drew keeps you occupied Petrea. Its nice that you can be with him all day.

I was excited to get an update on your family. Isn't it amazing how how hard it can rain out there. When we were leaving North Carolina one year it was raining heavily and I fully understood what it meant when people wrote/said, "the rain rolled in". In the distance it literally looked like waves coming it...you have to see it to understand.

What an adventurous activity... fruit picked ripe from the tree is so good.

Drew is adorable, he has grown so much since the last pictures.

You've taken some beautiful photos. Looks like a cool but enjoyable day together as a family. Our Costco in Medicine Hat is identical. At first I thought it was a picture of the one here. The more things change the more they stay the same. Love you all and miss you. Mom
